Rev. David Hart was born and raised in Wawa, a small mining community in Northern Ontario. Wawa is well known by cross-Canada travellers as the small town with the statue of the big goose. During his high school years, David was very actively involved in theatre and drama, skills he has carried over into his ministry. Upon completing high school, David attended the University of Windsor, Ontario where he obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in English Literature and Philosophy. Upon completion of studies at the University of Windsor, David attended Emmanuel College of the University of Toronto, where he obtained his Master of Divinity Degree.
David was ordained by the London Conference of the United Church of Canada in Stratford, Ontario in 1982. He subsequently was placed on the Nipissing Pastoral Charge just south of North Bay, Ontario where he served three small rural congregations for five years. David next moved into the position as Minister for Personnel and World Outreach for the Manitou Conference of the United Church of Canada. During these years, he was actively involved in building the South African anti-apartheid network in Northern Ontario. Travel to South Africa and interest in third world living conditions next led David to a six month sabbatical in Central America, with a focus on Guatemala. In 1993 he moved to Bedford to assume leadership at Bedford United Church.
David's passion in life has to do with contemporary spirituality and the journey of prayer as it leads us ever closer to God. The journey of prayer is intended to transform human life enabling human beings to living more compassionately and justly in the world. And so there is a “justice and peace” dimension to David's ministry that is a natural offshoot of his contemplative bent.
In his down time, David enjoys hiking, swimming, golfing, writing and reading and playing guitar. In 2005 his highly acclaimed book, Christianity: A New Look at Ancient Wisdom was published by Northstone Publishing.
David and his family love the community of Bedford and the congregation of Bedford United Church! After the birth of their daughter in Nova Scotia, David and Daniele became committed "Blue-Nosers." Mind you, the Northern Ontario goose and the Northern Ontario wolf still do make an appearance from time to time as David is known to honk and howl when the spirit moves him!
