The Outreach committee works to help provide essential items to those with needs in our congregation and community and works to be an advocate for social justices relating to world issues.
Beacon House Paul Nauss, Bedford United Church’s representative, serves as Treasurer and on the Board of Directors of Beacon House. The congregation contributes to their family Christmas box program. The first Sunday of every month is Beacon House Sunday, a time when the congregation is encouraged to bring non-perishable food items to help stock their shelves. The Product of the Month campaign aims to bring renewed enthusiasm for this practical ministry. Several Saturday mornings a year, our church has a volunteer work day at Beacon House’s retail store.
Hope Cottage Hope Cottage provides hot meals for the homeless in the downtown area. Joan MacKinnon coordinates the collection of casseroles and tea biscuits from BUC, and delivers them to Hope Cottage on a monthly basis. To be added to the list of volunteers, please contact the Church office.
Cobequid Multi-Service Center The Cobequid Multi-Service Center Christmas Programs are supported through our annual collection of mitts, hats and stockings on the Mitten Tree. White Gift Sunday presents are destined to the Cobequid Center’s Christmas program.
Brunswick Street Mission Winter boots and jackets are collected November to mid December to assist clients of Brunswick Street Mission. In addition, BUC aids the mission through the periodically selling of baked beans and brown bread.
Phoenix House Phoenix House is a non-profit, community based organization located in Halifax offering at-risk and homeless youth the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness and find a path from the street. Each year, BUC members fill Christmas stockings, hung by the UCW, for the youth under the care of Phoenix Youth Program. BUC also assist with their daily snack program.
Emergency Relief Fund
A special fundraiser is held each year for the Emergency Relief Fund, to help those in our community who are experiencing unexpected hard times. This important fundraiser also serves as a great social event for the congregation. The annual Luncheon will be held on February 14th immediately following the Annual Congregational Meeting.
World Outreach Bedford United contributes generously to the United Church of Canada’s Mission and Service Fund through direct contributions. The Fund links partners in Canada and internationally to promote national and international service and ministry. As part of our local world outreach, we have been working with two refugee families from Columbia.
The Nova Scotia Gambia Association June Boswell is Halifax Office Manager of the Association. With her leadership, BUC has been active in fundraising and education related to the NSGA peer education program in The Gambia, which focuses on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.
